“Advanced Robotic System for Automated Inspections in Decommissioning” designated as an IAEA Collaborating Centre

 The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been redesignated as a Collaborating Centre by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 2 fields: “nuclear security” and the “advanced robotic system for automated inspections in decommissioning.”
 In November 2021, JAEA was designated as an IAEA Collaborative Centre for a 4-year period in two key areas: "Decommissioning and Waste Management" and "Nuclear Security." Following the end of this period, JAEA has been re-designated as an IAEA Collaborative Center to continue its activities in these two fields.

<Overview>

 There is a policy within the IAEA for each Deputy Director General in their respective areas to designate an organization from a Member State to the IAEA Collaboration Centre. These designated organizations provide technical assistance and human resource development services to IAEA Member States.
 This time, the Fukushima Research and Engineering Institute was designated for the research theme “Advanced Robotic System for Automated Inspections in Decommissioning” which will be carried out by CLADS and NARREC. This theme aims to survey and physically visualize radiation levels and equipment conditions at decommissioning sites, thereby facilitating rational and safe planning of decommissioning operations.
 The robotic technology holds significant potential as a universal technology for ensuring worker safety and efficiently advancing decommissioning efforts, simultaneously. Leveraging technical expertise and experience, the Fukushima Research and Engineering Institute will utilize IAEA channels to support decommissioning-related activities across Member States.
